Dr. Gareth Hataye was born and raised in Hawaii. He attended the University of Hawaii from 1978 to 1982. In 1983, he received his B.S. degree from Pacific University, and in 1986, his O.D. degree from Pacific University College of Optometry. He began his professional career back in Hawaii, and then to Oregon. In 1988, he and his wife, Dr. Alaina Softing-Hataye, moved to Minnesota, where they have since called home. With two grown daughters, they still find free time in short supply. He enjoys outdoor activities, with cross country skiing and cycling taking up the lion’s share. He is active with the Southern Minnesota Bicycling Club, and helps coach the Austin Area Cycling Team, a program that helps 6th to 12th grade students develop an life long appreciation for mountain biking. He volunteers with the Austin Morning Lions Club, and has a passion for cooking, having participated in the Foodie Throwdown, a fund raiser for the Hormel Historic Home for several years.
Dr. Hataye most enjoys the benefits of his private practice by allowing him to provide the most comprehensive vision and medical care to his patients, and strives to integrate processes to best serve his patients. Telehealth appointments are available in addition to conventional in-office appointments. By offering the most innovative and quality ophthalmic products and specialty contact lenses, along with affordable options, he works to meet his patients’ every need.
